About this Activity

Wednesday, January 21, 2026
5:30 - 6:30 PM Central / 6:30 - 7:30 PM Eastern / 3:30 - 4:30 PM Pacific

This free CME activity is exclusively available to members of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Pregnancy serves as a vital window to impact long-term health. Physical activity benefits maternal and fetal outcomes. Yet, clinicians often provide vague or overly cautious advice. This hesitation stems from uncertainty regarding safety. Evidence confirms sedentary behavior poses higher risks than moderate exertion. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week.

This activity examines the physiology of exercise during gestation, reviewing evidence-based guidelines for uncomplicated pregnancies and distinguishing between absolute and relative contraindications.

Clinicians will learn to tailor prescriptions and compare protocols for previously sedentary patients against those for athletes. The goal is to maximize benefits while minimizing risk. Benefits include glycemic control, weight management, and improved psychological state. Data also shows a reduction in operative vaginal deliveries. This session equips physicians to counsel patients effectively. Evidence-based guidance replaces fear with confidence. The result is a proactive approach to prenatal care.

Learning Objectives

Those participating in this activity will receive information that should allow them to:

  • Distinguish between absolute and relative contraindications to aerobic exercise in pregnant patients using current clinical guidelines.
  • Create individualized physical activity plans requiring modifications for anatomical changes, balance shifts, and joint laxity.
  • Differentiate between normal physiological responses to exertion and specific warning signs necessitating immediate cessation of activity.
