Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug during pregnancy in the United States, and use has climbed as more states legalize recreational sales. Many patients see cannabis as a safe, natural treatment for nausea, anxiety, pain, and poor sleep. Studies link prenatal exposure to low birth weight, preterm birth, and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) advises patients to avoid cannabis before conception, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding.
This session is a conversation, not a lecture. A maternal-fetal medicine specialist and an OB/GYN board-certified in addiction medicine discuss what the evidence shows, where it falls short, and how to counsel patients without pushing them away from prenatal care. Drawing on cases from their own practices, they address screening, cannabis use for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, breastfeeding, and the toxicology testing and reporting questions clinicians face at delivery.
Bring your questions. The faculty answer participant questions throughout the session.
